Contest! The Cross and the Crescent.

I’ve got myself an extra copy of R.C. Sproul & Abdul Saleeb’s The Cross and the Crescent.

If you’d like it, simply leave a comment that starts with the words “The one thing the my church needs to do is…” and then fill in the blanks.  This is me being curious.  +

I’ll draw a winner randomly on Friday.  You can follow me on twitter & tweet about it if you’d like.

The one thing that my church needs to do is focus more attention on its immediate surroundings. If TBPC is bound and determined to stay in a downtown location that perhaps we need to rethink our mission in the community.

The one thing that my church needs to do is have more babies… the Muslims certainly are.

You leading by example? You've got three. How many more are you shooting for?

The one thing that my church needs to do is have a more active evangelistic presence in our immediate community.

The one thing the my church needs to do is take advantage of the new tunes that are out there and put them to the hymns we sing. We sing to solely give glory to God–part of doing that is playing singable hymns, it has nothing to do with being “contemporary”.

I'm in agreement. But I have a thought: since no one is really a fan of the old-tyme hymn music by itself (I don't know anyone who listens to instrumental organ renditions of “Trust and Obey” on their drive home) is the old fashioned music the best choice in getting a group of different believers together? All united in their dislike for the musical style?

We need to install some security cameras in hopes of decreasing the number of prostitution transactions that occur in our parking lot. (Looking out the window at the wrong time can sometimes make for an interesting bible study.)

For real?! I guess your church is in the right part of town, at least.

  • http://www.fingertoe.com/blog Josh Reighley

Yes, that has indeed happened before… We are the right neighborhood to see a lot of that stuff.. Getting a lot more locals coming to church lately as well, which is a really good sign, in my way of thinking. I do think the Church can be transformative to the community.

Justin, welcome to the blog & thanks for your comment.

I went through a split 5 years ago that hasnt fully healed, but seeing God give more and more grace to everyone on both sides is a wonderful blessing. I pray it will be the same for you & the others recovering.

Thanks for the comment, Brian! You’ve mentioned something every church needs – the full counsel of God.

The one thing the my church needs to do is come up with a new parking/traffic flow strategy to handle the increased congestion.

The one thing that my church needs to do is heal from the politics that happened over ten years ago. It's the church I attend at college and apparently, my church started when some politics happened at another church in town and a split happened. It's sad when people ask what church I attend and then they look at me is if I'm a dirty towel. With that being said though, the other church needs to heal as well. It's saddening, and I pray for both congregations, cause we are after all, one church.

“The one thing the my church needs to do is: use more expository sermons and less topical sermons.

The one thing the my church needs to do is be more intentional in building relationships outside the Sunday service and have gospel conversations.

  • Tim Vander Pol

I disagree. We do listen to instrumental (harp or piano) renditions of traditional hymns all the time in my home (but not on the drive home usually, and maybe not trust and obey I'd have to look). Maybe at 37 I am considered old now though… As someone who once had some musical skill and who prefers to sing parts as most melodies are written for tenors or sopranos, I find most of the contemporary tunes for me unsingable. I find it distracting to sing a song to a different tune when the “normal” tune works just fine.

Music is important to me and when we looked for a church when moving to Tacoma, music was a contributing factor in where we landed. Not the factor, but a contributing factor. It probably is for people who want a different style of music too though.
