On Sickness and Health

3 John 3:2 – Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.

Small talk, I find, centers on a few choice but universally accepted topics. Sports and weather are both staples.  Another is health.  Particularly if the person being spoken to is or has recently been ill. Or perhaps think that they will be ill.

Thomas Boston said “O what a shame is it for thee to sit down in company, and rise again, and part with them, and never a word of Christ to be heard where thou art ?”

I inquire regularly on my brother and sister’s health. It’s an easy piece of conversation. It’s a good thing to wish someone well, but too often things are left at a physical level.  Too often I take the time to chit-chat about well being and make no word in relation to the state of their soul.  I want those to be well that I talk to.  I want even more for their souls to be well.  So why is it that I so often get it backwards when conversation begins?
